The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) is an annual international competition for high school students worldwide. The Olympiad aims to ignite a passion for astronomy and astrophysics, discover and nurture young scientific talent, and foster academic exchange, knowledge sharing, and cross-cultural connections among participating nations.
As one of the twelve prestigious International Science Olympiads, the IOAA represents the highest level of academic excellence for high school students. In 2026, the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA 2026) will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam, from September 25 to October 5, 2026.
IOAA 2026 is hosted by the Hanoi People's Committee, in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training (DOET) serves as the primary executing agency, working alongside municipal departments and relevant ministerial bodies to implement all event operations.
Phenikaa University serves as the main venue for IOAA 2026, hosting key academic competitions and central operational activities. Equipped with modern facilities, a vibrant academic atmosphere, and an inspiring educational environment, Phenikaa University provides an ideal setting for young astronomers from around the globe to compete, learn, interact, and build lifelong networks.
Hosting IOAA 2026 reflects the firm commitment of the Government of Vietnam, the City of Hanoi, and relevant authorities toward advancing science education, cultivating STEM talent, and expanding international academic cooperation and integration.
In 2026, the IOAA arrives in Hanoi - the designated City for Peace - where rich historical traditions seamlessly converge with modern urban vitality. Under the same roof, young wolrdwide astronomers and educators will gather to share knowledge, cultivate a shared passion for exploring the space, and write the next inspiring chapter in the journey of the international IOAA community.
